Nozzles are the most important part of a 3d printer, without which it would not be possible to print as we know. If the nozzles are not installed correctly or if they have problems, an unwanted error message may appear on the 3d printer screen (if the printer has a screen) and the printing may stop in the middle.

Nozzle size

The nozzle diameter is one of the most important parameters for your 3D printer. A wrong choice can lead to printing problems, such as poor layer adhesion or nothing, even with the best filament. There are various nozzle sizes available:

Nozzle diameter

The nozzle diameter is the smallest cross section of the hot end of the extruder. It must exactly match that of the filament you intend to use for printing. If you use a nozzle with a diameter that is too large, air bubbles will form in the extruder and a filament jam is more likely to occur. In addition, a small nozzle size reduces the quality of the print because it allows less plastic material to pass through at one time; this results in thinner layers and therefore less detail in the prints.

The smaller the nozzle diameter, the higher the resolution of the prints.

Printing speed

The larger the nozzle diameter, the faster the extrusion speed of the material. This means that using larger nozzles allows objects to be printed at higher speeds.

The nozzle diameter is the most important factor in determining the flow rate of the 3D printer. The flow rate can be calculated as follows:

Flow rate (mm3/s) = [Nozzle diameter x Speed (mm/s)] / [Nozzle area (mm2)]

Nozzle diameter is usually expressed in millimeters, and its size depends on the material being printed with.
